HPB, Upper GI Laparoscopic and General Surgeon

Mr Marty Smith is the director of HepatoPancreatoBiliary surgery at the Alfred hospital in Melbourne and practises privately at Cabrini Health, specialising in surgery of the liverbile ducts and pancreas, and advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

After completing a degree in Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Melbourne (BSc.). Mr Smith went on to study Medicine at the Flinders University of South Australia (BMBS). Mr Smith then trained in general surgery at the Alfred hospital in Melbourne completing his fellowship in January 2004. He then undertook an Upper GI and Hepatobiliary fellowship at the Western Hospital in Melbourne before travelling overseas for further training.

In the UK a he completed an Upper GI (Oesophagogastric) fellowship at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge followed by a Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) Surgical fellowship at the Royal London Hospital. He then spent time working with the Liver transplant unit at Kings College hospital in London before returning to Australia.

Currently Mr Smith, in addition to his clinical work is also involved in surgical teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Court of Examiners and is a Board-Member of the ANZ HPB Association.
